The client who hired us for a more substantial residential project had a simpler problem at hand: he had bought a house adjacent to his new parcel in Beverly Hills Post Office and the railing around the deck wasn't safe for his two toddlers.
With our knowledge of carpentry from our years of real construction this was an enjoyable little exercise. We devised details that we child safe but also in keeping with the modern architecture of the small home set in the hillside. The continuous ribbons of cedar wrapped around the trees and benches sprouted from them here and there. Rather than interfering with the view of the trees beyond, the warmth of the wood and the slight enclosed enhanced the release to the green beyond.
